Science Shows

(in the Illawarra Coal Science Theatre)

The Science Centre offers an assortment of science related shows. These shows are performed on a regular basis in our theatre, but may require bookings for groups. Our science shows may be brought to your school or hall through our Outreach program.

The Sound and Music Show, and The Liquid Nitrogen Show are available for public viewing on weekends and school holidays. Please check our schedule for information on when these shows will be held.

The Liquid Nitrogen Show

The Liquid Nitrogen Show is recommended for upper primary ages and higher, and is the recommended show for adult groups. This show investigates the science behind heat and temperature, showing the effects on all sorts of materials when we cool them down more than 200 degrees (C) below room temperature. The Liquid Nitrogen Show lasts 30 minutes.

The Bubbles And Balloons Show

The Bubbles And Balloons show is for both the young and the young at heart. The bubbles and balloons show covers the shapes and sizes of bubbles, what is needed to make bubbles, how to make exotic bubbles, the difference between bubbles and balloons and special balloons we can get. The Bubbles And Balloons show lasts 30 minutes.

The Fantastic Fluids Show

The Fantastic Fluids Show is for upper primary and lower high school students. This show asks "what is a fluid ?", using many different materials including slime and liquid nitrogen to demonstrate the various properties of different fluids. The Fantastic Fluids Show lasts 30 minutes.

The Sound And Music Show

The Sound And Music show is for upper primary and lower high school students. This show answers the following questions and more using simple objects and musical instruments: What is sound ? How does sound travel ? What does sound travel through ? What is required for a change in sound ? Does sound carry energy ? Loads of good vibrations and ingenious instruments!  See the amazing musical coathanger and play the straw trombone!  Make farm yard sound effects from a bucket and a plastic cup!  Find out what makes sound and how it travels, how to make music with dustbin and why sound needs energy.The Sound And Music Show lasts 30 minutes.

The Science Of Sport Show

The Science Of Sport Show is for upper primary and lower high school students. This show investigates the concepts of inertia and momentum, balance, impact, and reaction, relating these concepts to a few aspects of sport from catching to protective clothing. The Science Of Sport Show lasts 30 minutes.

The Physical Phenomena Show

The Physical Phenomena Show is for upper primary students. This show investigates the different forms of energy around us and how we can change this energy from one form to another. The Physical Phenomena Show is offered for our Outreach program and lasts 1 hour.

The Busy Body Show

A fun introduction to the human body! Using props and costumes, younger children will learn about muscles, bones, lungs, the heart, the digestive system and the 5 senses. The Busy Body show lasts 30 minutes and is suitable for Preschool to Year 4.

The Weather Show

Find out what causes weather, trade winds, tornadoes, hail, snow, and thunder. See clouds, rain and lightning created before your very eyes! Includes demonstrations using liquid nitrogen and a tesla coil. The Weather show lasts 30 minutes and is suitable for Years 5 to 12.
