Science Centre Building

The Science Centre's opening hours are 10 AM to 4 PM every day including most public holidays. Anyone is most welcome to visit the Science Centre during this time. We also accept group bookings and we have a function room available for hire. For more information, see the General Admission or Bookings pages.

There is on-site parking which is free for Science Centre visitors.

Major Exhibits

New to Wollongong is the Interactive Illusions exhibition. All the way from Scitech in Perth, we have now have a selection of big and bright travelling exhibits that all show weird and unusual illusions

Do you like to get "hands on"? Our two-storey Exhibit Hall has over 100 interactive exhibits relating to various themes like "The Machine ", "Dinosaurs, Fossils and Coal" and "Nanotechnology"

Do you have an interest in astronomy? Visit the BlueScope Steel Planetarium - our Planetarium - for stunning recreations of the night sky - from around the world, from different eras - even from a different planet! The Planetarium also offers exciting laser shows.

If you want to see the real sky up close & personal our Observatory has a powerful telescope and plenty of amazing images from distant galaxies far, far away...

Entertaining Science Shows in the Illawarra Coal Science Theatre explore the more interactive fields of science, whether it be blowing gigantic bubbles, freezing objects or just blowing things up :-).

School Outreach

Our school outreach program is called Star Trails. Star Trails brings science shows to your school. A high quality portable planetarium is also available which uses the latest full dome projection equipment to create visually spectacular and highly informative presentations.

3D Printing Workshops

This cutting edge workshop is for youngsters keen to discover and explore the exciting technology of 3D design and printing in a fun, hands-on small group setting.

Participants will be learning a wide range of skills including basic CAD modelling and design concepts.

Tuesday 13th Janaury 2015 - 9.30am - 3.30pm
Wednesday 14th January 2015 - 9.30am - 3.30pm
Thursday 15th January 2015 - 9.30am - 3.30pm
Friday 16th January 2015   -  9.30am - 3.30pm

* Mac or Windows Notebook computer with a mouse.
* Lunch and drinks
* Earbud headphones

Children MUST be 11 - 14 years of age to attend this workshop.

Children's Holiday Science Workshops

Monday 19th January - Wizard Science... Float a paperclip, create a magic balloon pig, watch a sultana dance and more. This workshop looks at the science behind magic tricks!   Suitable for 6 - 10 year olds.  

Tuesday 20th January - Lasers & Holograms... Explore holograms, colour mixing, prisms and lasers as we learn about rainbows and light.  Make your own diffraction viewer and spinning tops to take home.  Includes demonstrations of our Tesla Coil, laser projector and "stringray machine".  Suitable for 6 - 10 year olds.

Wednesday 21st January - Crystals & Ice Cream... Learn how crystals evolve in nature, make ice cream and watch crystals form before your eyes!  Suitable for 6 - 10 year olds.

Thursday 22nd Janaury - Galaxies, Stars & Meteorites... Attention all space cadets!  Learn about the night sky, explore the planets touch a real meteorite and make craters.   You can create  your  own  constellation  pictures  and  galaxy artworks to  take  home.   Inculdes a demonstration of our Zeiss Star Project.  Suitable for 6 - 10 year olds.

Friday 23rd Janury - Kitchen Chemistry... In this workshop we try some cool experiments using items found in everyone's kitchen.  Suitable for 6 - 10 year olds.

TICKETS:   Ticket pre-purchase is essential.  Tickets may be booked, however places are not confirmed until the tickets are paid for.  Tickets are not refundable unless 5 working days notice is given.
COST:  $15 /child per workshop for Members and $20 for non-members.  Workshops will run for 90 minutes.


ALL workshop ticket holders will be admitted at 9.15 for a PROMPT 9.30am start.
Children must be within the required age range to attend each workshop.
